Welcome. Bienvenue. At first glance, we may look like a small charming European village that time skipped over. And there’s a good reason for that. We began as a culturally diverse city with French-Canadian roots founded before the Revolutionary War around 1735. And today we’re blessed to have many original buildings left proudly standing with stories to tell all. These impressive structures give an amazing peek into our country’s past. But they do more than that. They call people. They beckon them in to learn more and to add to their appeal.
Our residents all feel that pull and are unified in their mission to not only celebrate Ste. Geneviève among themselves but to introduce it to the world. For those looking for a vibrant and affordable place to live and own a business, you’ll find a close-knit supportive group of excited individuals and families proud to be business owners, artisans, wine makers, historians, helpful neighbors. They welcome you to be a part of such an important and historical city that offers something truly unique to those who visit.
We believe Ste. Geneviève isn’t defined by its history; it’s energized by it. Our collective journey builds on preserving our most valued commodities, adding to them in creative and meaningful ways, and introducing them to those who will treasure and support all we have to offer. Our downtown is centered around the Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park (operated by the U.S. National Park Service) curating and nurturing four 18th century homes that are open to the public for tours. You will also discover a creative hub featuring old world pewter smiths, lacemakers, contemporary art galleries, and masterful crafts. Antique and vintage shops, bookstores, and gift shops complement and add to the endearment. Restaurants offer everything from fresh baked goods to quick bites, to sit-down fine dining. The Great River Road Welcome Center, several top-notch museums, and an original 1876 Roman Catholic church round out the experience.
Many more attractions surround our city located on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi… adding to its wide-ranging appeal—including award winning wineries, golf courses, hiking through geological wonders, a water park, picnicking areas, wetlands with areas to view migratory birds, even a dinosaur museum. You won’t want to rush through all that Ste. Geneviève offers. There are ample inns and other lodging sprinkled throughout the city, many in refurbished original structures. Plus, there are camping areas to accommodate all our different visitors.
We are a community that enjoys sharing its heritage with the world whenever possible, so we feature a calendar full of festivals and events, such as the Déjà vu Spirit Reunion at Memorial Cemetery, which offers a lantern tour where you can come face to face with past inhabitants in original dress telling their stories. Other activities include a civil war interpretive event, house tours, and our traditional Jour De Fete and French Christmas celebration, to name a few.
So, that’s our story as multi-faceted, enticing, and heartfelt as it is. We hope it intrigues and inspires you, all of you, of all ages and backgrounds. No matter why you decide to visit, we promise to make your stay one where you’ll find your Joie De Vivre in life.
